If your business website doesn’t present potential clients and customers with an accurate depiction of your company, then it may be doing more harm than good.
Does your website appears like it was built years ago? If so, potential clients are going to assume your business is behind the times and incapable of providing current products or services. Or maybe even worse: the assumption that your business lacks the capability or will to adapt to the ever-changing environments of our economy. There are many aesthetic features that were popular in late 90’s and early 2000’s that are now considered outdated.
If your website has any of these issues you may want to consider revisions:
• No images Just text – People today exspect to see an engaging site layout with visual aspects that text alone cannot compete with, a picture next to a description of a product can work wonders. There is truth in the old adage: “A picture is worth a thousand words” and if one picture is that good why stop there?
• Scrolling Words, Sentences, Images – Almost anything moving is probably a bad idea. Most of these things are considered as annoying to the user.
• Chaotic Backgrounds – If your background is too busy, no one can read your content.
• Visitor Counter – These are pointless now and usually tell visitors exactly how unpopular your site may be.
• A Guestbook – No One uses these anymore.
• Illegible Text – If your text blends too much no one can read it, and over use of odd fonts and weird color combinations for foreground/background can be hard on the eyes of your potential customers.
• Auto-play Music/Video – Give your viewers the option and time to prepare for sound.
If they don’t know what they are buying, they will leave.
One easy way for a website to fall short of its potential is to leave out pertinent information on products or services offered. Consumers are using the web to do much of their research before purchasing while they shop. If your website doesn’t give all the details on a product, the potential customer will find a website that has the information they think they need, readily available, to help them reach the decision to purchase the product or service.
Provide detailed descriptions, measurements, multiple pictures and pricing options. If it’s a service you offer, explain every last detail of it, explain why and how your service is absolutely superior to the feeble offerings of your competitors.
Old Content
Give them a reason to come back. If you have a news section without any new or relevant items, then not only is it pointless, but it’s probably sending the wrong signals about your business. Your visitors might think your business stagnant and lacking new development, that you don’t care about your website, that you can’t afford to update your website or don’t know how, or possibly worse – you aren’t even in business anymore!
No Feedback
People want their opinions to be heard – Your customers want to know that they are purchasing top quality products and services. What better way than by showcasing positive customer reviews and testimonials? Allow an area to leave feedback and/or reviews of your products and services. Word-of-mouth and peer opinions have always been extremely large factors in a buyer’s decision-making process. If your website doesn’t allow them to do this, it’s not up-to-date.
Review your competitors’ websites, looking for the above issues, also note things you see that you like or think may work for your site as well. Keeping up with the Jones’ can help spark ideas to use on your own site.
If your website has any of the above issues or want to keep ahead of the competition, you should seriously consider consulting a web development firm. It is their business to know what’s hot, what’s not, when it makes sense to make the necessary changes to reach your goals, and most importantly the experience and know how to get the job done in a timely manner. Professional web development can give your site the edge it needs to compete in today’s harsh business climate.
