It will be used by only a few machines in my company, and a few clients. I intend to keep it closed-source.

What are your thoughts on having a custom operating system (based on the linux kernel) developed by one of the custom software development services available?

I need to be able to update (patch) the kernel regularly, and I don’t want to keep paying this company to do custom updates. Can I use standard kernel updates? Are they distro-independent?

I just want your thoughts. If you have a better idea, then that’s good too. But there are so many features for my product that I’m fairly certain I need my own distro.

I’m considering, for the sake of making some side profit, taking up some freelance development jobs. I can do a wide variety of things; everything from business software, tools/utilities, libraries and APIs, games and graphics applications, even operating system kits and bootloaders. I’m fluent in C, C++, C# and Intel x86/64 assembly language.
