Search Engine Optimization targets major website search tools people use such as Google or Yahoo to ensure your webpage will show up near the top of any search engine results when anyone searches for a keyword or key phrase that is relevant to your website. Here are some tips used to increase website traffic.
1) Choose a Good Domain Name
When selecting a domain name, try to pick one that is relevant to your website, content, and what you think other people will be searching for you by.
2) Proper Use Of Title Tags
When looking at a website client such as Internet Explorer or Fire Fox, for example, right at the top left of the client’s window title bar you will see a title for the website. This is the title tag. The title tag on your page is one of the most important parts of helping you attain a decent rank in search engines. You need to make sure that the title tag relates to the content of your page. So, if your page is about web development then your title tag should also be about web development. It is important to try to include a couple of keywords in your title tag if at all possible.
3) Meta Tags
Today, the keyword meta tag is rarely used by the majority of search engines and appears to have little to no direct impact on your ranking in the larger search engines like Google. The description meta tag is however a different story. You will see the description meta tag along with the title tag in search results. When you search Google, the list returned shows a link/title (this is the title tag) and a small description (this is the description meta tag.) Just like the title tag it is a good strategy to try and use a couple of keywords or phrases relating to your web page.
4) Heading Tags
Heading tags should be used as titles within the page itself, these should be used in corresponding order. H1, being the first heading tag, should be the most important title on your page. Again, referring back to web development, your H1 tag should be ”web development.” Then, depending on your content, you may have another paragraph about web design, so your h2 tag should be “web design.”
You should keep to this structure throughout your page and never use more than one of each of the heading tags.
5) Alt Tags
Every image that is on your page should have an alt tag. Because search engines can’t look at a picture and determine what the image is, we have to tell them what the image is. This is done by using an Alt tag for each image.
6) Naming of Images, Navigation & Pages
All images and pages need to have the correct names. Again, all of your names for any folder or file should be relevant to your website. So for any pictures that I am placing in my main content about web development, I would ensure that the name of my images related to web development. e.g. web design, custom software , flash animation, anything at all to do with web development. I want to do the same with my pages too, the homepage obviously has to be index.htm, but for the other pages we can name them anything we like, so be sure to name them something relevant to the content on the page.
I might have index.htm for my homepage, custom_software.htm for my page about custom software, flash_animation.htm for my page about flash animation, etc.
The links in your navigation to these pages should also be search engine friendly, such as HOME | CUSTOM SOFTWARE | FLASH ANIMATION
The ultimate goal that we are trying to attain is to make sure that all elements of SEO are related to each other, all titles, heading tags, content, etc reflect the same or similar things so that when a search engine visits your website, it can clearly determine what your website is about. Presenting your content in this way will give you the best possible chance of paring well with search engines.
7) Content – KeyWord Density
Within your website content, you should try to refer to keywords or phrases that you think people will be searching for. Search engines will examine your content and total up the number of times each word/phrase is used, to formulate a ratio between keywords/phrases and normal text. So, without writing random text, or lines and lines of keywords, try to include them as much as you can in relevant places.
8 ) Start And Maintain A Blog Relevant to Your Industry
Having a blog on your website is an excellent way to build up more content, as long as you abide by the above guidelines. Adding relevant articles to your website will result in more pages on your website that are indexed by the search engines, making your site more relevant to the search terms, and as a result more people will be likely to visit your website. The idea is if your blog is relevant then these people will click through to your main website from the articles.
9) Build Up Back Links
Sometimes called inbound links, backlinks are the lifeblood of search engine positioning. While all of the above tips may account for up to 20-30% of your page rank with in Google the other 70-80% is a result of the amount of other websites linking back to you. You need to get your website out there, listed in as many relevant directories, search engines, blogs, and social networks as possible. The more links the better! And the more relevant the website the better!
When creating your link or asking people to link to you, make sure that the link itself is a keyword or phrase that you want to associate with your business, do not simply use your domain name.
10) Don’t try to deceive or otherwise mislead search engines
Search engines may penalize sites they discover using deceptive methods, either by reducing their rankings or eliminating their listings from their databases altogether. Such penalties can be applied either automatically by the search engines’ algorithms, or by a manual site review. One infamous example was the February 2006 Google removal of both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for use of deceptive practices. Both companies, however, quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google’s list.
